Punjab Olympic Association
The Punjab Lawn Tennis Association (PLTA) is the provincial body in Punjab (Pakistan) responsible for promotion, governance, and development of tennis (lawn / hardcourt etc.). It works in conjunction with the Pakistan Tennis Federation (PTF), Sports Board Punjab (SBP), and other stakeholders to organize tournaments, training camps, select players, and maintain facilities.
Rashid Malik (Tamgha-e-Imtiaz) is a central figure in PLTA leadership: he’s Senior Executive Vice President of PLTA, and often named as Secretary General in some contexts. He is also a former Davis Cup captain and coach.
Captain (R) Fazeel Asghar is mentioned as President of PLTA. For example, during the Bahawalpur Divisional Tennis Championship, Zohaib Raza said “under the vision and guidance of Captain (R) Fazeel Asghar, President of the Punjab Lawn Tennis Association.”
Waqar Nisar is Finance Secretary of PLTA.
Other PLTA officers include Asif Riaz (Tournament Referee), Faheem Siddiqui (Tournament Coordinator) in many tournaments.
Punjab Tennis Academy, Bagh-e-Jinnah, Lahore is a key facility used by PLTA for tournaments, training camps, and high performance programs.
State-of-the-Art Tennis Courts at Nishtar Park Sports Complex (Lahore) are used for major events, e.g. Punjab Open Tennis Championship etc.
PLTA is quite active: organizing tournaments of various categories, coaching camps, and junior development programs. Key examples:
Junior & Senior Tournaments
SICAS Punjab Junior Tennis Championship — held by PLTA. Amir Mazari and Hajra Sohail were champions in different age categories. Pakistan Today
Bank of Punjab Junior National Tennis Championship 2025 — opening held at Punjab Tennis Academy. Pakistan Today
Sheheryar Malik Memorial Pakistan Open Tennis Championship 2024 — inaugurated at Sports Board Punjab Tennis Academy. The Nation
Punjab Open Tennis Championship 2022 — held at the newer courts next to Punjab International Tennis Stadium, Nishtar Park.
High-Performance Training Camps
Camps for juniors & selected male/female players, with good coaches (former national/international players). E.g., the first high performance camp in Lahore, held by PLTA in cooperation with SBP.
Sports Board Punjab’s High Performance Tennis Training Camp, with free training in Lahore.
Support & Development
Support for young players to compete in international events. For example, players Bismel Zia and Hajra Sohail selected to represent Pakistan in the ITF Asia 14 & Under Development Championship 2025, with PLTA’s trials and backing.
Emphasis on bringing tournaments to Punjab to raise standards and exposure.
Inter-division / Inter-club Events
Divisional tournaments, like Bahawalpur Divisional Lawn Tennis Championship.
Championships organized in different sectors, such as DHA Lahore Juniors & Seniors Tennis Championships.
PLTA was awarded “Best Performance Award for 2024” by the Pakistan Tennis Federation (PTF). The award was given to Rashid Malik on behalf of PLTA.
PLTA is generally credited with producing young tennis talent and improving the standard of junior tennis in Punjab.
Based on what is reported, some implied challenges and opportunities are:
Need for more financial/private-sector support – The cost of tennis (courts, coaching, travel) makes growth harder. PLTA leaders appeal for private sector sponsorship. E.g., mention of Ali Embroidery Mills helping sponsor training camps.
Grassroots outreach across Punjab – While Lahore has good facilities, maintaining regular competitive structure in more remote or smaller districts/divisions may need strengthening. Divisional tournaments help, but ensuring consistent infrastructure across the province remains a challenge.
Facilities and maintenance – Building more courts that meet international or modern specs; ensuring maintenance etc.
Continuity & professional coaching – Having more certified coaches, regular high performance camps, and exposure to international competition is ke
