Major Contributions and National Games

Punjab Olympic Association has been one of the most active provincial sports bodies in Pakistan.
It organized the 1st National Games in 1948 at Karachi, followed by games in 1950, 1952, 1956, 1960, 1966, 1978, 1984, 2000, and 2012.
All these events carried international recognition, and notably, during the Second National Games in Lahore (1950), a team of Turkish athletes participated — marking the first international participation in Pakistan’s National Games and giving the Olympic Movement a tremendous boost.

Silver and Diamond Jubilees

The Silver Jubilee of the Punjab Olympic Association was celebrated in 1951 in a very befitting manner. The events were organized on a larger scale than the previous National Games, and foreign teams from England, Ceylon, and Iran took part in these historic events.

After 60 years of its establishment, the Diamond Jubilee was celebrated in March 1983, marking one of the biggest sports festivals ever held in the country — a true celebration of the province’s sporting legacy.

Challenges and Revival Efforts

During the 1990s, the Association experienced a lull in activities, but the 68th Punjab Games were successfully revived and organized after 13 years, from 10–12 April 1999.
Later, the 71st Punjab Games were held in Lahore from 7–9 April 2011, thanks to the untiring efforts of Mr. Idris Haider Khawaja, Secretary General of the Punjab Olympic Association.
Unfortunately, the Punjab Games have remained inactive since then due to circumstances beyond the control of the Association.

Indo-Pak Punjab Games and Cross-Border Sports Friendship

A major milestone was the introduction of the Indo-Pak Punjab Games in December 2004, where 540 sports persons from Punjab (Pakistan) participated in the inaugural edition held at Patiala (India), hosted by the Indian Punjab Olympic Association.
This initiative greatly promoted goodwill and friendship between the two neighboring countries through the medium of sports, though later political developments sadly interrupted this wonderful exchange.

Grassroots Sports Development

To revive sports activities in educational institutions and promote talent from the grassroots level, the Punjab Olympic Association introduced Inter-School and Inter-College Games in 2008.
Nine editions have been successfully organized, and the 10th edition was scheduled to be held in Lahore at the Punjab level from 1st to 5th November 2019.

Infrastructure Achievements

Through the personal and untiring efforts of the Punjab Olympic Association, significant sports facilities were developed at the Nishtar Park Sports Complex, Lahore, including the Punjab Stadium and the Punjab International Swimming Pool — a lasting contribution to the province’s sporting infrastructure.

Outstanding Leadership and Recognition

The Association proudly notes that Mr. Idris Haider Khawaja is the only person in Pakistan’s history to have organized the National Games twice in Lahore (2000 and 2012) as Organizing Secretary — both events being highly successful and completed on the lowest budget.
